Why Balancing Pool Water Chemistry Is Crucial
In warmer, humid climates, the rate of chlorine consumption is significantly higher. This is due to factors such as increased pool usage, higher temperatures that accelerate the evaporation of chlorine, and faster organic contamination from the environment.
The instinct to "solve" this by overdosing chlorine often backfires, creating hazardous by-products like chloramines and trihalomethanes (THMs). Chloramines form when chlorine binds with ammonia from organic matter like sweat and urine.
These compounds not only give off a strong "chlorine" odor but also cause eye irritation and respiratory problems. Trihalomethanes (THMs), a category of disinfection by-products (DBPs), are linked to more severe health risks, including cancer, liver damage, and kidney issues.
